The Boston Police Department wishes Boston residents happy and safe Halloween! The department encourages safety and supervision during the annual Trick-or-Treat season. Halloween is fun for people of all ages, but it is most important for parents to closely adhere to a few guidelines to ensure your night runs smoothly!If you would like to celebrate Halloween with the Boston Police Department, see below for a police-sponsored event in your district.
Events Include:
• District A1 (Downtown/North End) October 27, 2007 4pm-9pm: Community members are welcomed to visit the Prince Street Park haunted village, watch a scary movie and snack on popcorn and refreshments. Don’t forget to wear your costume!
• District A7 (East Boston) October 26, 2007 3pm-5pm: Parents and children 13 & under are invited to celebrate Halloween at the Paris Street Gym located at 112 Paris Street in East Boston. . Festivities will include candy costumes, hot dogs, giveaways, music and much more!
• Area B2 (Roxbury) October 31, 2007 5pm-11pm: Area B2 (Roxbury) along with Project Right, will be hosting movie night for the children in the district. Movies can be viewed at “The bubble” / The Grove Hall Community Center located at intersection of Geneva and Normandy Streets. The event will include movies and movie ticketgiveaways. The evening will also include popcorn, hot dogs and other refreshments.
• Area B2 (Roxbury) October 31, 2007 5:30pm-7:30pm: Area B2 Roxbury along with M.A.M.L.E.O. will be hosting a Halloween party for all community members 13 and under located at 61 Columbia Road. Festivities will include games and prizes, face painting, candy, hotdogs and music!
• Area B3 (Mattapan/Dorchester) October 30, 2007 3pm-5:pm: Children from age 11 and under as well as parents are invited to enjoy the B3 Halloween party at the Mildred Ave Community Center featuring music, hot dogs, candy, giveaways and much more! Dress in your Halloween costume and enjoy!
• District 14 (Allston/Brighton) October 31, 2007 3pm-5pm: Community members are invited to participate in the annual “Halloween Stroll” through Brighton center ending at the Allston/Brighton YMCA 615 Washington St. in Brighton. The stroll concludes with a Halloween party featuring music, candy and pizza!
• District E5 (West Roxbury) October 26, 2007 5pm-8:pm: Boston Police District E5 will host ghosts, goblins, princesses, fairies and various other creative creatures for an evening of Halloween fun! The district has planned a number of activities, entertainment and family festivities. The party will take place at District E5 located at 1708 Centre Street in West Roxbury.
• District E13 (Jamaica Plain) October 31 4pm -6:pm: Officers and the Agassiz Community Center will host a Halloween party in the Agassiz cafeteria for children 6-12 years old . *Parents must accompany children not enrolled in the after school programs.
• District E18 (Hyde Park) October 29, 2007 3pm-5pm: Officers from District E18 will host the 3rd Annual Halloween party at St. Ann’s located 20 Como Rd in Readville. The party is geared for children age11 and under. Parents are encouraged to accompany your children. Come join officers for a fun filled party with music, candy, hot dogs, and giveaways!
Halloween Safety Tips:
• Parents should establish a route for children, stay within familiar areas and surroundings
• Remind kids not to enter strangers\’ homes or cars
• Remind children to avoid home without an outside light on
• Attach your phone number and address to your children’s costume
• Take a flashlight
• Be sure clothing/costumes are bright, reflective and flame retardant
• Set rules about not eating treats until kids get home. Be sure to inspect all treats before allowing kids to eat them.
• When in doubt, throw it out! Candy that has been opened should be thrown away. Any homemade treats or fruit should be inspected closely.
• Never cross the street from between parked cars.
• Watch open flames from jack-o-lanterns as they can catch costumes and long wigs on fire.
• Make sure that fake knives, swords, and guns are made from cardboard or other flexible materials to avoid accidental injury or worse, have them mistaken for the real thing!
It is also important to ensure that your home is safe and accessible to trick-or-treaters. As adults there are some very simple things we can do to make the evening safe everyone.
• Turn on your porch light.
• Move lit jack-o-lanterns off the porch where kids get bunched up if they are trick-or-treating in groups.
• Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard.
• Drive slowly all evening-you never know what creature may suddenly cross your path.
• Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police.
