BOSTON, Oct. 22, 2007—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis today announced the arrests of two men in connection with the homicide of a 28-year-old college student across the street from Roxbury’s James P. Timilty Middle School earlier this year.After a seven-month investigation in the Suffolk County Special Grand Jury, Boston Police homicide detectives today served warrants charging ANTWAN C. CARTER, (D.O.B. 10/13/88), and DANIEL PINCKNEY, Jr., (D.O.B. 7/4/88), both of Boston’s South End, with the shooting death of Cedirick Steele on the afternoon of March 14. Carter is additionally charged with a single count of witness intimidation stemming from communications he has made while incarcerated at the Nashua Street Jail.
“Today’s arrests are the direct result of an investigation by Suffolk County homicide prosecutors and their Boston Police counterparts, who worked hand-in-hand to identify the men responsible for Cedirick’s death,” Conley said. “By securing the testimony of witness after witness behind the closed doors of the Special Grand Jury, we’ve built solid, compelling evidence that will help us hold those killers accountable in a court of law.”
Conley said the Grand Jury investigation will remain open so prosecutors can present any additional evidence stemming from the arrests.
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, \”I would like to commend Boston Police Homicide detectives and the District Attorney\’s office for their remarkable work and commitment. As with every homicide case, the Boston Police Department vows to work tirelessly to hold perpetrators accountable. I hope that these charges bring Mr. Steele\’s family some small sense of relief as they continue to cope with their tragic loss.\”
Steele suffered multiple gunshot wounds shortly before 4:00 p.m. near the busy intersection of Centre and Highland streets. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
A graduate of Madison Park High School, Steele was enrolled as a liberal arts major at Bunker Hill Community College at the time of his death. Investigators do not believe he had any gang ties.
Carter and Pinckney are scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court Department.
