Two Arrested on Firearm, Drug ChargesYesterday at 12:01pm, members from the Youth Violence Strike Force were traveling in an unmarked cruiser on Delhi Street towards Crossman Street when they heard the sounds of screeching tires. Officers observed a black vehicle occupied with two males traveling at a high rate of speed. Officer reversed their direction in attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Officers caught up to the suspect’s vehicle as it abruptly pulled to the right at Delhi and Violet Streets.
Officers approached the vehicle and requested the operator’s license and registration. The operator reached over to the glove compartment with his left hand concealing his right waist area with his right forearm. Officers again requested the operator’s license. At that time the suspect reached into is front right pocket with his left hand keeping his right forearm concealing his right waist area.
Due to this suspicious behavior, officers asked the driver to step out of the car. As the operator stepped out of the driver’s seat, he continued to keep his right arm stiff against his right side. Officers conducted a pat frisk and immediately felt a hard object consistent with the handle of a firearm on the suspect’s hip.
Officers also spoke with passenger who appeared to be nervous and breathing heavily. Officers asked the passenger if he had anything on his person that they should be concerned about. The passenger stated, “I have a fifty bag on me.” Officers recovered a medium size plastic bag containing marijuana.
Akeem Brown, 18, of Dorchester was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Possession of a Firearm with Altered Serial Numbers, Carrying A Loaded Firearm and Possession of a High Capacity Feeding Device. Osbert Baker, 22, of Mattapan was arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D, Possession of Class D and Distribution of Class D with in 1,000 ft of a School Zone.
All in a Day’s Work
On Wednesday, October 18 at approximately 8:30pm, Area B-3 (Mattapan) officers along with members of the Youth Violence Strike Force were patrolling the area due to a recent rise in drug and firearm activity. While driving down Kingsdale Street in an unmarked vehicle, officers observed a group of five to eight individuals in the street. At the sight of the cruiser, the group began to walk behind the fence of 90-92 Wales Street. One individual, well known to police, yelled several unintelligible words and made offensive gestures towards the officers. As officers approached the individual to conduct a threshold inquiry, he became disruptive and was uncooperative as officers began to conduct a pat frisk of the suspect, yelling, “You can’t search me!” At this time, the suspect struck the officers with his hand, resulting in the officers taking him to the ground and placing him in handcuffs. The suspect kept shouting obscenities towards the officers and for all present to call his mother, resulting in citizens coming out of their homes to view the commotion.
After the suspect was placed into the cruiser, the officers were about to head to District B-3 station when the suspect’s mother arrived on scene. Officers observed her traveling at a high rate of speed in the reverse direction on Wales Street and onto Kingsdale Street and abruptly stop before the unmarked cruiser, thus blocking it in. A woman exited the car in fit of rage and demanded to know what was going on. She stated that she was not going to allow police to arrest her son. Officers advised her to step away from the cruiser because she could be arrested for attempting to prevent the arrest and that she could come to B-3 to bail her son out.
As the woman turned to walk away, the cruiser began to leave the scene, when she abruptly turned and walked right in front of the moving vehicle. The woman began screaming that she was going to sue the police department for deliberately striking her. At this time, a juvenile snuck up by the driver’s side door and began to strike the officer in the face, causing his glasses to fall off. The officer pursued the juvenile suspect and apprehended him across the street. As officers attempted to handcuff the suspect, the woman ran over to the scene on her alleged injured foot and began to interfere in the second arrest saying, “Police are not taking my sons anywhere!” Responding officers were able to control the woman and aid in the arrest.
As officers attempted to place the second suspect in the cruiser with his brother, the adult suspect began holding his legs in the air attempting to prevent his brother from being placed in the car with him. Officers were eventually able to secure both suspects in the cruiser. The woman was cited for Operating to Endanger and One Way Violation. Kenneth Douglass, 18, of Dorchester was arrested for Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, and Assault and Battery on a Police Officer. A 16 year-old juvenile from Dorchester was arrested for Disturbing the Peace, Destruction or Injury to Personal Property, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, and Assault and Battery on an Emergency Medical Technician.
