Boston Police Homicide Detectives Seek the Public’s Help With InvestigationBoston Police detectives are investigating a shooting which claimed the life of a thirteen- year old boy. His death marks the 52nd homicide of 2007.
On October 5, 2007 at approximately 7:56pm officers received a call for shots fired at 103 Evans Street in Dorchester. Upon arrival, officers observed a male lying down, bleeding from the head and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was rushed to Boston Medical Center and was pronounced shortly thereafter.
The victim has been identified as Steven Odom, 13, of Dorchester.
“Our hearts go out to the Odom family as they grieve the loss of their young son,” Mayor Thomas Menino said. “There is no place for violence in our city. Not on our streets, not in our homes and not in our schools. We need to remain united in our commitment to end the violence and solve this heinous crime. Together, we can take back the streets and start a new era of hope.”
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “On behalf of the department, I would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to Steven’s family and friends during this difficult time. I would also like to thank the Odom family for their ongoing cooperation and assistance with this investigation.” Commissioner Davis added, “We have been encouraged by the recent increased levels of community cooperation and we hope we will be able to maintain that momentum. As a community, we all share the same objective and desire to hold the person or persons who perpetrated this cowardly act responsible. As a father and a member of law enforcement, I am outraged.”
Boston Police continue to actively investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. Investigative information indicates that Steven was not the intended target. Last evening, Shotspotter (the new gunshot detection system) was able to detect the sound of the gunshots prior to the first 911 calls. In addition, the system was able to lead investigators precisely to ballistics evidence, which resulted from the shooting.
Boston Police have increased patrols to the area utilizing the Bike Unit as well as the Youth Violence Strike Force. A Safe Street Team, in conjunction with members of the CrimeStoppers Unit, will be going door-to-door distributing brochures on BPD’s anonymous tip program and asking residents if they may have seen or heard anything.
Detectives are asking witnesses or individuals with information about this shooting to come forward. Please call the Homicide Unit at 617-343-4470. For individuals who wish to remain anonymous, you are urged to call either the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS (8477) or text ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463). Police will protect the identity of those who wish to remain anonymous.
