Boston Police Department To ConductTesting of New ‘Gunshot’ Detection System
On Wednesday, October 3, 2007, starting at approximately 9:15 p.m., the Boston Police Department (BPD) will conduct testing of the new ‘gunshot’ detection system known as Shotspotter. The testing will include simulated live gunfire near the following locations:
· Blackstone Park (Washington Street/E. Brookline)
· Ruggles Street/Tremont Street
· Horatio Harris Park (Harold Street/Townsend Street)
· Geneva Avenue/Bowdoin Street
· Franklin Field (Blue Hill Ave./Talbot Ave.)
· Walker Playground (Norfolk/Mildred Ave.)
Each affected Police District assigned Community Service Officers to notify the appropriate neighborhood and community groups of the test. The BPD has made continued efforts to make residents aware that this test is occurring. Tonight a BPD Firearm Instructor, who will utilize blank ammunition, will conduct simulated gunfire.
The installation of the Shotspotter system is complete. At this time, testing is conducted to calibrate the system to its surroundings. The department will continue to provide updates and alerts related to the launch of the new gunshot acoustic system.
This sophisticated acoustic sensor system was developed to detect gunshots by recognizing the precise time and location of the gunfire. Sensors are installed in designated spots on city streets, which alert 911 operations with exact discharge positioning information within seconds of gunfire. Such technology allows for a more rapid police response, increases accuracy of forensics work and enhances overall operational effectiveness.
AVAILABILITY: Superintendent Dan Linskey will be available tonight at 9:00pm. Superintendent Linksey will be located at the corner of Washington Street/E. Brookline in the South End near Blackstone Park to answer questions. Test firing will commence at Blackstone Park at 9:15pm.
B-Roll Opportunity: Police Officers and Police Cadets are distributing flyers to door-to-door this evening to alert local residents to the testing process. The distribution is taking place in neighborhoods surrounding the above mentioned areas.
