Traffic Stop Leads to Recovery of Firearm, NarcoticsYesterday around 6:30pm, officers made a routine traffic stop for an expired registration sticker on Washington Street in Roxbury. When approaching the vehicle for the driver’s license and registration, the officer smelled a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the car. As he attempted to alert his partner of his observations, the vehicle sped off down Washington toward Dudley.
Officers pursued the vehicle with their emergency equipment activated. The vehicle was driving erratically, driving on the opposite side of the road and swerving in and out of traffic. During pursuit, the four occupants of the vehicle jumped out of the automobile while it was still moving. The vehicle continued to roll down Washington Street toward Circuit Street unoccupied.
At this time, officers began to pursue the suspects on foot through the St. Joseph’s Housing Development. One suspect split from the group, running toward Circuit Street and up towards Regent Street. Officers observed the other three men run into Washington Park and radioed backup officers the location of the fleeing suspects. The responding officers apprehended all three suspects in the park.
The abandoned vehicle was found on Washington Street, where it had come to a stop at a light pole after colliding with another vehicle. No injuries were reported from the accident. A loaded firearm was recovered from the motor vehicle. Officers also recovered six bags of narcotics from the suspects.
Eugene Sanders, 17, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm as well as Unlawful Possession of Ammunition. John Knox, 23, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Possession of Class D Drugs. Donald Pinckney, 18, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Driving to Endanger, Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle, Leaving the Scene of Property Damage, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Distribution of Class B Drugs, and Distribution of Class B Drugs within 1,000 Feet of a School Zone. All three men are from Dorchester.
Suspect Arrested After Botched Robbery
Last night around 10:13pm, officers in District A-1 (Downtown Boston) were approached by a victim who stated he was just robbed at knifepoint at the corner of Tremont and Winter Streets. Officers observed the suspect attempting to flee towards Winter Streets. Officers told the suspect to stop but he did not comply. Officers then observed the suspect drop a metal object and attempt to kick it into the sewer. After a brief struggle, officers were able to apprehend the suspect. The suspect continued to resist as officers walked him to the cruiser. The suspect began twisting his body and a hammer fell out of his sweatshirt.
The victim stated he was walking with his girlfriend to the train when the suspect approached him. The victim stated that the suspect stated, “Are you that kid from New York?” The victim replied, “No”. At that point, the suspect pulled out a knife and attempted to rob the victim. The victim was able to dodge the suspect and called for the officers to help him.
Michael Socobasin, 31, of South Boston was arrested and charged with Intent to Rob while Armed, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Possession of Burglarious Tools. Officers did recover a knife and a hammer from the suspect.
Person Shot on Columbia Road
Last night at 11:06pm, officers in District B-2 (Roxbury) responded to a radio call for a person shot at 108 Columbia Road. On arrival, officers located a 23-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center and treated for her injuries. The victim is in critical but stable condition.
Also on scene was a 4-year-old male child; he was transported to the hospital as well for evaluation.
