Officers Arrest Two Suspects Dumping Safe in Harbor

This morning around 10:00am, undercover officers assigned to District 7 in East Boston observed a U-Haul Truck illegally parked in front of 246 Border Street. While conducting an investigation on the truck, the officers observed the occupants of the truck attempting to dispose of a large object into the Boston Harbor. When the officers approached the suspects, they attempted to walk away discarding a two-wheel dollie. The officers observed the item the individuals where disposing of was a grey colored safe with extensive damage where it was forced open. The separated suspects gave officers conflicting stories about the safe and why they were in East Boston. Police arrested Youssef K. Abou-Zaki, 24, of Quincy and Brian Lopata, 38, of Braintree who were charged with illegal dumping as well as Receiving Stolen Goods.Both suspects will be arraigned in the East Boston District Court on Friday. Investigators from District 7 are further investigating this incident in partnership with Detective’s from the Quincy Police Department.
