At approximately 1:46 am, an officer observed a vehicle with a broken windshield traveling on Columbia Rd. toward Blue Hill Ave. A registration check revealed that the vehicle license plate had been reported stolen. On Columbia Rd. and Geneva Ave., the officer performed a traffic stop and attempted to approach the suspect vehicle by foot, the operator then fled in the vehicle toward the direction of Blue Hill Ave. The officer then pursued the vehicle traveling Jewish War Veterans Memorial Drive and proceeding toward Hyde Park Ave.As the officer turned left onto Hyde Park Ave., the police cruiser sustained a flat tire. At that time, the officer discontinued following the suspect vehicle. The pursuit lasted approximately three minutes and covered approximately three miles. Soon thereafter, Boston Police operations received a report of a motor vehicle collision at 362 Hyde Park Ave. The vehicle was identified as the same vehicle, which had fled from the above traffic stop.
At the time of the collision, the motor vehicle contained four occupants. All four occupants were transported to local hospitals. Backseat passenger, 15 year-old Jeffrey Martinez of Roslindale, sustained fatal injuries. A second passenger, an 18 year-old female, is in critical condition, but stable. A third passenger, a 14 year-old male, and the operator both sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The vehicle operator, 17-year-old Daniel Rodriguez of Roslindale, was placed under arrest at the hospital. Rodriguez will be charged with the following offenses: one count Motor Vehicle Homicide, Refusal To Submit, Speeding, Operating To Endanger, Operating M/V Registration Suspended/Revoked, Operating M/V Without Being Licensed, Insurance-Operating Without, Number Plates Attached and Cracked Windshield.
