Suspicious Device Found at Atlantic Avenue and Essex Street

On Monday, August 14, 2006 around 10:50 am, officers from District A-1 responded to a radio call for a suspicious package found in a parked vehicle. Upon arrival, the officers determined the object was of a suspicious enough nature to call for the Boston Police Bomb Unit. The Bomb Unit determined that the package contained a number of electrical components. At this time, the K9 unit was called in for further inspection.Sections of Atlantic Ave. and Essex St. were closed and traffic was diverted away from the area.
Taking the necessary precautions, explosives specialists decided to dispose of the object in a safe manner. Bomb Squad personnel utilized a standard “render safe procedure” known as a water- base disruptor to disable any potential threat. After this process was completed, it was determined that the object was a computer with exposed wires covered in plastic wrap.
No injuries were reported and traffic flow was restored at 12:07 pm.
